This is a piloted class this year, assignments are subject to change. PLEASE SCROLL DOWN TO SEE ALL IMPORTANT INFO.
Week 1: Week 2: Week 3: Practicing Genres and techniques (landscapes with water, how to paint glass, the still life) Week 4: Practicing Genres and techniques (landscapes with water, how to paint glass, the still life) Week 5: The portrait--Old Master's techniques and palette Week 6: The portrait--Old Master's techniques and palette Week 7: The Old Master Painting--students will select their own painting from the 1400's-1650's (with teacher approval) and replicate that painting as best as possible. This project will also introduce utilizing water-based oil paints and have a written paper component. Week 8: The Old Master Painting--students will select their own painting from the 1400's-1650's (with teacher approval) and replicate that painting as best as possible. This project will also introduce utilizing water-based oil paints. Week 9: The Old Master Painting--students will select their own painting from the 1400's-1650's (with teacher approval) and replicate that painting as best as possible. This project will also introduce utilizing water-based oil paints. Week 10: Demo: The Non Traditional painting. Students will investigate Contemporary painters in publications such as ArtNews, Art Forum, Juxtapose, Modern Painters, etc. They will create a large painting inspired by contemporary painting methods. Week 11: Work week on Non Traditional Painting. Week 12: Demo: Stretching your own canvas. Students will be making thier own canvases to paint on. Cross collaboration with Biology Teacher--amoeba paintings. Week 13: Work week on cross collaboration painting. Week 14: Work week on cross collaboration painting. Week 15: Beginning concentrations. Demo: The Artist's Statement. Students will begin writing a cohesive statement that deals with the body of work they will produce. Week 16: Student work week on concentrations. In progress critique by teacher and peers. Week 17: Student work week on concentrations. Writing component: Peer critique of Artist Statement. Week 18: Final work week. Paintings are hung in the Nest (or other location), presented and critqued by teacher and peers. Opening reception is organized for the last day of the semester and open to both CCA, parents, and the public. Students are responsible for contacting the media to feature reception in the local papers. Students are also responsible for email contact regarding their show.
NEW YORK TIMES WEEKLY ART RESPONSEDUE EACH MONDAY in your sketchbook (EACH WORTH 20 points):This is a written response to an article from the NY Times' Art Section in your sketchbook for the sole purpose of having you read about what is currently going on in the art world and to expand your horizons. THIS ARTICLE SELECTED MUST BE RELATED TO VISUAL ART. FAILURE TO DO SO WILL AMOUNT TO NO CREDIT FOR THE ASSIGNMENT. KEEP IN MIND, THIS IS NOT GROUP WORK. 1. PRINT out the article and READ it. You might need to reread it to understand it completely. 2. In your sketchbook, WRITE LEGIBLY A 2 PARAGRAPH RESPONSE. (IF LEGIBILITY DOES NOT WORK FOR YOU, TYPE IT AND PASTE IT INTO YOUR SKETCHBOOK) FIRST PARARGRAPH: Short Paragraph summarizing the article. What are the main points? SECOND PARAGRAPH: Your personal response to the article. How do you relate this article to your personal life/ your artwork? Name something new you gained from this article. Has your thinking changed in any way after reading this article? Does this article bring up issues regarding art to the general public? Can you make any connections to other disciplines from this article?
