2008-2009 Class Auditions

Welcome to the Program:

We are pleased to welcome back all students and incoming students to the music program. Torrey Pines is proud to offer a wide variety of music programs that appeal to different music styles and levels of playing. We encourage all students to audition so that they can be placed in the right class and so that we can get to know each student personally during the audition process.

 



Why Audition?

Auditions are required for placement into all advanced-level instrumental classes (Wind Ensemble, Advanced Strings, and Jazz Band) and those who do not audition will be automatically placed in either the Intermediate Orchestra or Symphonic Band classes. Neither the Intermediate Orchestra or the Symphonic Band are for "beginners" and students should already have experience playing in the band or orchestra setting.

*All students are welcome to audition for the upper level classes (wind ensemble, advanced strings & Jazz Band), enrollment will be determined by skill, not grade.
 
These auditions are only for class placement and will not be used to determine seating in the ensemble. Chair auditions will take place during the first few weeks of the fall semester.

Thanks so all students who auditioned May 6th-8th, audition results have been posted. Auditions for students who are new to our school distrtict will take place August 19th. Please sign up for an audition time and contact Mrs. Willcox with any questions you may have.


If you are signing up for an audition, please be sure to enter a email address and ID number unique to you. For example, siblings may not share the same email addresses or ID, but may share parent email, phone number, etc.

Audition Materials & Requirements:

Your audition will consist of scales, sight reading, and a short prepared piece (which will be provided to you below). The requirements for each class are as follows:

  • Symphonic Band
    • **No Audition Required
  • Wind Ensemble
  • All major scales (and scales in thirds) and all harmonic minor scales tongued 8th notes (quarter note = 80)
  • Sight reading
  • Required piece
  • Jazz Band
  • All major scales (tongued) and all blues scales (swung) 8th notes (quarter note = 90)
  • Sight reading
  • Required jazz etude
  • Improvisation
  • 12 Bar Blues in the following keys: F, G & Ab
  • Intermediate Orchestra
    • ***No Audition Required
  • Advanced Strings
  • All Major scales and arpeggios and a, e, b, d and g melodic minor scales. At least two octaves, three octaves preferred. 16th notes four notes per bow (quarter note = 60)
  • Sight reading
  • Required piece
