We are a student-centered community of musicians committed to the transformational power of the arts. Students, faculty, and honored guests of the department celebrate music by cultivating an open environment that explores and encourages collaborations uniting us with all the arts as an integral part of the school. Our academic programs and ancillary activities provide a supportive environment focused on learning, performance and composition.

The goal of the TPHS Music Department is to provide opportunities that allow students to advance as far as they desire into the world of music. Students can specialize on an instrument or voice, study additional instruments, explore the world of jazz and improvisation, realize their potential as composers and gain a solid background in music theory as they develop a life long appreciation of music.

Our music students easily find a welcoming home in the music department at Torrey Pines. We are one big family at Torrey Pines, supporting each other and working together towards a common goal.

All returning Torrey Pines students and incoming students who wish to be placed in the higher level classes (Advanced Strings, Jazz Band, and Wind Ensemble) must audition for class placement. Auditions for choir are not required. All students who do not audition for an instrumental class will be placed in either Symphonic Band or Intermediate Orchestra. These are not beginning classes and students should be able to play their instrument proficiently.

Class placement auditions will take place May 6-8 in the Torrey Pines Music room. These auditions will only determine class placement and not chair seating.
