2009-2010 Class Auditions

Welcome to the TPHS Music Department:

Torrey Pines is proud to offer a wide variety of music programs that appeal to different music styles and levels of playing.
All returning Torrey Pines students and incoming students who wish to be placed in the upper level classes (Advanced Strings, Jazz Band, and Wind Ensemble) must audition for class placement.
Students who do not audition will be placed in either Symphonic Band or Intermediate Orchestra. Neither of these classes are considered beginning classes and students should be able to play their instrument proficiently.
New student Auditions will take place 8/25

Audition Requirements:

Symphonic Band & Intermediate OrchestraNo Audition, experience required (not beginning classes)
  • Wind Ensemble
  • All major & harmonic minor scales, tongued 8th notes (quarter note = 80) MEMORIZED
  • Sight reading
  • Required Excerpts
  • Jazz Band
  • All major scales, tongued & all blues scales (swung) 8th notes (quarter note = 90) MEMORIZED
  • Sight reading
  • Required Excerpt
  • Improvisation
  • 12 Bar Blues in the following keys: F, G & Ab
  • Advanced Strings
  • All Major scales and arpeggios and a, e, b, d and g melodic minor scales. At least two octaves, three octaves preferred. 16th notes four notes per bow, quarter note = 60 MEMORIZED
  • Sight reading
  • Required Excerpts
