Now in its fourth year,
TPHS Jazz Band is a challenging and very exciting class that offers unique
creative opportunities for performing, arranging, and even composing
music. Covering a variety of musical styles such as rock, swing, funk,
Latin and bebop, students develop a broad range of musical influence, as
well as the history of its time.
The Jazz Band participates
in many performances throughout the community, including charity events,
casual functions, jazz festivals, joint concerts with jazz bands from
North County schools, noon concerts on the TPHS Quad, as well as TPHS's
own Winter and Spring concerts. This award-winning band and its
individual student performers also compete in annual music festivals such
as the Coronado Jazz Fest and Music in the Park at Magic Mountain.
The Spring 2003 concert,
which included many original pieces composed by Jazz Band students, is a
perfect example of the creative and innovative opportunities open to the
Jazz Band class. The Jazz Band course currently enrolls fewer than 20
students, accepted on an audition basis. Instrumentation includes sax,
trumpet, trombone, guitar, bass, piano, percussion, and vocals. Sign up
for an audition right away to ensure yourself a seat, before the class
reaches its size limit.
