Frankenstein Discussion Questions Ch 1-6

1)     How does the story of Frankenstein supposedly arrive to us, the reader?  How many people does the story go through before it arrives to us?  Why is this distance between Victor and us so important?

2)     What are the similarities between the backgrounds of Victor and Robert?  How is the background of either reminiscent of Mary Shelley?

3)     How does Victor describe the way he came to pursue knowledge in the natural sciences?  What does he at first find lacking in modern natural sciences, and what makes him at last find such modern studies and methods attractive?

4)     Discuss Victor’s process of creating the Monster and his initial reaction to seeing the Monster.  In what ways are his reactions to be expected?  Unexpected?  When Victor speaks of the Monster what language (words, tone, connotations, etc) does he use?
