It's likely that students will enter this course with little experience or formal knowledge about the field of economics. This course is designed to inform students about the nature of economics and will assist them to think clearly and objectively about current economic issues. We will investigate the workings and goals of the market system, the management of the national economy, the role and function of the stock market, the Federal Reserve, monetary policy, and the banking system.

Methodology

The text, periodicals, and the internet, along with information gained through independent research, will comprise the major portion of the information sources.

Group related learning will play a significant role in the learning process. Groups this semester will be involved in several areas including: creating a business, investing in the stock market, and debating issues of international trade.

Behavior

Tardies: on the fourth tardy and on each tardy thereafter students will be assigned lunch detention. Polite and courteous behavior is expected at all times. Accordingly students are expected to:

  1. Refrain from all use of cell phones and recording devices.
  2. Keep the classroom clean.
  3. Respect the feelings of others.
  4. Engage yourself in the process of learning.

Class work

  1. Incomplete work will receive a "D."
  2. Late work will be accepted for a grade no higher than a "D" before following test make-up date.
  3. Exams or assignments missed as a result of truancy or suspension will receive a grade of zero.
  4. If you miss an exam it is your responsibility to make up the exam on the next make-up day. The make up dates are listed on the course syllabus. Unless PRIOR arrangements are made, make-up exams will be held on these dates only at 6:45 in the morning at the testing center located in the NEW AV room.
  5. Homework: Homework is due on the day of the corresponding test date. In case of absence, the homework must be submitted on the following day for full credit.
  6. Quizzes: an outline of the chapter on which the quiz was based may be substituted for a quiz missed due to an excused absence. These outlines will be clearly labeled and turned in with the corresponding homework packet.

Your course grade will be based on the following:

  3. Homework 20%
  4. Quizzes 10%
