1. Follow spot: lighting instrument that moves to “follow” an actor
2. Production Team: those working on a play
3. Production Design Team: director and designers who develop the ideas
4. Production Meeting: meeting for design team to share ideas
5. Technical Rehearsal: run-thru with sets, lights, props, sound, costumes
6. Blocking: movement on stage
7. Shift Rehearsal: run-thru without actors to practice moving sets
8. Lighting Rehearsal: run-thru w/o actors to look @ lights
9. Dress Rehearsal: run-thru w/ costume & makeup
10. Prompt Book: script w/details about production
11. Stage Business: specific action by an actor, a “bit”
12. Call: tells a specific crew member to “go”
13. Properties: “props” – details that can be removed from a set
14. Running: control operation of something
15. Shift: to change positions of scenery, props, equipment
16. Hanging: placing lighting instruments
17. Focusing: direct the lights to specific areas
18. Circuit: to connect a lighting instrument to a stage circuit
19. Patch: to connect the circuit to a dimmer
20. Dress: to add details to a set

TYPES OF THEATRES VOCABULARY 1/30

1. Proscenium: theatre with wings, an apron, is like a picture frame. Audience on one side
2. Thrust Stage: Audience on 3 sides of stage
3. Arena Stage: Audience sits on all sides
4. Forced Perspective: increases the apparent depth of an object
5. Raked Stage: higher in back than front
6. Stock Set: shows a general location (like a garden)
7. Drop: large cloth painted to look like a location
8. Wings: sides of stage, to hide scenery
9. Apron: extension of stage to the front
10. Borders: curtains across top of stage to hide lights
11. Orchestra Pit: usually below stage level, in front
12. Proscenium Arch: picture frame front of prosc.
13. Center Stage: Right in the middle
14. Stage Right: The actor’s right – on stage
15. Stage Left: The actor’s left – on stage
16. Down Stage: forward on stage
17. Up Stage: backward on stage
18. Traps: covered holes in the stage
19. Fly: to raise an object above the stage floor
20. Batten: metal pipe used to suspend scenery
21. Fly Gallery: elevated walkway above the wings
22. Mask: to block the audiences’ view
23. Travel: to move horizontally

2. Tormentor: Vertical curtain that mask wings
3. Grand Drape: Main curtain (covers prosc. Opening)

6. Border: horizontal curtains that mask pipes
7. Cyclorama: Cyc – white curtain fills back of a stage

  11. Turnbuckle – attaches to a cable to adjust height
  12. Hinges – 2 jointed pieces of metal (think of a door hinge)

  14. Swivel casters – turns 360 degrees
  15. Caster Lock – locks the wheel
