What is YLHC?
Directed by emergency room physician Dr. Andrew
Accardi and SDA science teacher Ms. McCluan, this program involves
9th-12th grade high school students from eight local area schools (San Dieguito
Academy, La Costa Canyon, High Tech High San Marcos, Carlsbad High
School,Torrey Pines, Canyon Crest Academy, Vista High, and Pacific
Ridge), and gathers monthly at the hospital to discuss the American health
care system, explore career opportunities, meet medical
professionals, and develop service projects to implement in their
For their 2009-2010 service project, SDA won the
award of "Most Creative" for their Scripps Hospital Cancer Fair
project regarding gastrointestinal (GI) cancers with an emphasis on
diet and early detection. They received this award again for
their 2010-2011 service project, "Roid Rage," which explored the
dangers of sports-enhancing drugs. For the 2011-2012 school
year, SDA won 3rd place for their presentation "Healthy Eating and
Eating Disorders". SDA was awarded 1st Place for their
2012-2013 project, "The Heart," which explored cardiac health and
heart anatomy. SDA was awarded 2nd place for the 2013-2014
project, "Earthquakes and Tsunamis: Disaster Preparedness".
In 2014-2015, SDA was awarded 2nd place for their project exploring
YLHC Members also participated in the American
Cancer Society's Relay for Life fundraiser in August of 2010.
