What is YLHC?

  • Directed by emergency room physician Dr. Andrew Accardi and SDA science teacher Ms. McCluan, this program involves 9th-12th grade high school students from eight local area schools (San Dieguito Academy, La Costa Canyon, High Tech High San Marcos, Carlsbad High School,Torrey Pines, Canyon Crest Academy, Vista High, and Pacific Ridge), and gathers monthly at the hospital to discuss the American health care system, explore career opportunities, meet medical professionals, and develop service projects to implement in their school communities.

  • For their 2009-2010 service project, SDA won the award of "Most Creative" for their Scripps Hospital Cancer Fair project regarding gastrointestinal (GI) cancers with an emphasis on diet and early detection.  They received this award again for their 2010-2011 service project, "Roid Rage," which explored the dangers of sports-enhancing drugs.  For the 2011-2012 school year, SDA won 3rd place for their presentation "Healthy Eating and Eating Disorders".  SDA was awarded 1st Place for their 2012-2013 project, "The Heart," which explored cardiac health and heart anatomy.  SDA was awarded 2nd place for the 2013-2014 project, "Earthquakes and Tsunamis:  Disaster Preparedness".  In 2014-2015, SDA was awarded 2nd place for their project exploring "Bone Cancers".

  • YLHC Members also participated in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life fundraiser in August of 2010.
