Two summers ago, I had the opportunity to go to Pinalito, Guatemala.
I took several murals that CCA painting students created for the
Pinalito community. While I was there I also painted a mural on
the side of their school. To the right are portraits of some of the
children I met. It was an amazing experience. I look forward to
writing more about it soon!
Q: Where are you originally from?
A: Cincinnati, Ohio
Q: How did you get to San Diego?
A: Packed up my stuff a couple of years ago, drove across the country and ended in San Diego.
Q: Did you go to school out here?
A: No, I actually went to Miami University --- in Ohio; where I studied art education with a focus on painting, printmaking and art history. Before you ask, Miami was a college before Florida was even a state, so I don’t know why people in Florida copied the name.
Q: How did you get into teaching?
A: I started out at Torrey Pines, teaching art, which showed me what a great district we are in, how dedicated the teachers are to the students and that there are a lot of really supportive parents. Now I am teaching at Canyon Crest which is exciting because we are focused on art, the students are really interested in the subject matter and other teachers are interested in collaboration.
Q: What do you like to do outside of school?
A: Surfing, despite being from the Midwest, I feel at home in the water. The past two summers I taught surfing to elementary kids. I just got a new shortboard that I am figuring out, and can’t wait to ride on the next decent swell. Also, I like to run. My goal is to run 50 marathons, one in each state, but I'm in no rush.
Q: How far along are you on that goal?
A: I am six down. I completed the Boston Marathon, which was a great experience.
Q: Why art and not another subject?
A: Art really allows us to express ourselves, in many different ways. Everyone can have a unique style and perspective on every work. What I get excited about most it teaching student's the rules, practicing the rules and then breaking the rules. It is a fascinating cycle where no matter the skill level, people of all ages can be challenged and excel.
Q: Can even un-artistic and non-creative people do art?
A: Of Course, everyone is creative at some level; it is just a matter of working through processes and learning techniques to expose people to their own creativity. Sometimes I have a hard time creating my own artwork, the struggle is part of my process. But you can find ideas all around us at home or in the community. We have great resource in our backyards with all the galleries in Solana Beach, Balboa Park, even the Getty up in L.A. and ….
Q: It sounds like you love San Diego, art and teaching?
A: Yes, Sometimes I cannot believe that I get to teach and talk about art every day and live in such a beautiful place!
