Group Enlargement Composition
Working in small groups you will enlarge a photograph taken be a CCA photography student. The photo you are given will be in a gray scale. You will need to choose what type of color scheme you want to portray the image with. The medium will be oil pastels, with a strong emphasis on "painting" with them. Instruction on how to enlarge a composition to proper scale will be given. This is a 2 1/2 day assignment.
Artistic License
In art, artists have the authority to create a piece of art as THEY see it. Meaning they have the right to manipulate what we know as reality, such as painting a tree purple or the sky green. This is an important to concept to understand and a fundamental part of this course. As an extention to the group enlargement composition, each person will create their own "artistic license." It needs to include the following elements: Your Name, A Photograph of Yourself, an Artistic Expression. As well as, completion of the following sentence: "My artistic license gives me the right to"______________________________________(fill in the blank). This is a 1 day assignment to be worked on during the Group Enlargement Composition.
Object Painting
Your first painting will be a "control painting." It's purpose is to show you and me your painting skill level. You will need to bring an object from home that you would like to create a painting of. I will not be giving any formal instruction. This painting needs to be kept in your portfolio for the entire term, so that at the end of the year you can compare you work to it.
Assignment 1: Color Theory
You will learn color relationships, how to mix color, and create tints, tones and shades throught the creation of a 12 step color wheel. The assignment will focus on using only primary colors, plus black and white, to make all other colors. The concept of craftmanship will be introduced.
Vocabulary:
Tint- a color plus white
Shade- a color plus black
Netural Grey-
Tone- a color plus netural gray
Monochromatic- one color plus gray
Primary Colors- colors that cannot be created by being mixed by other colors. (red, yellow, blue)
Secondary Colors- two primary colors mixed together (orange, green, purple)
Teriatry Colors- a primary color + secondary color (red orange, yellow green, blue violet)
Complementary- colors opposite each other on the color wheel
Analogous- colors next to each other on the color wheel (usually a group of 3 or more)
Triatic- colors equally distant from each other on the color wheel

Project 1: Choose your own Color Adventure
The objective of this project is to truely understand color in terms of how to mix it, color relationships, tints, tones, shades, and how to make harmonious color relationships. You have the choice between 3 different options. Choose the option that is going to allow you express yourself.
*Everyone must choose a color scheme(s) and make a color chart before starting.
Option 1-
Abstract Composition
Use of atleast one color scheme
Visual evidence of a full range of value in each color used
Option 2-
One subject divided
Divide the subject into 6, using 3 the three complementary color schemes
Repeat each color scheme two times, inversing the main color
Option 3-
One subject repeated (xerox option)
Using one subject paint it 10 times, each time in a different color scheme

This is a 4 day assignment.
Assignment 2: Brushstrokes
Artists need to find there own style of brushstroke. Just as each person has a unique type of handwriting, artists have personalized brushstrokes. For this assignment you will need to divide and 11 x 18 inch paper into 20 sections and FILL each section with a DIFFERENT brushstroke. You may use a variety of brushes to achieve this. You are limited to ONE color of paint. The objective it to think about the mark that the brush makes on the paper, and to realize that you are in control of each mark. Be creative and let loose.
This assignment is worth 10 points.
This is a 1 day assignment. Project 2: Mono-Chromatic Painting
Using one color, plus black and white you will create a 16 x 20 inch painting on gessoed canvas. The subject for the painting will be an object that you have painted white. The focus of this painting is on VALUE. You will need to use at least 5 different and DISTINGUSHABLE VALUES on your painting. Your painting should represent your object as realistic as possible.
There will also be a focus on brushstroke and composition.
Before starting this painting, you will need to complete at least FOUR thumbnail sketches, ONE VALUE Drawing, both using CHARCOAL. You will need to conference with me before starting on your actual painting!

Assignment 4: Part to Whole Composition

Assignment 5: Rule of Thirds Composition and Introduction to Acrylic Paint
Utilizing your understanding of Tempera paint and composition, you will create an original individual painting that visually demonstrates the Rule of Thirds. There needs to be an dominant focal point and a limited color palette. Limit your color palette to warm or cool colors. Demostrate your understanding of tinting, shading and toning your colors. Instead of using Tempera paint, you will be using Acrylic paint. The subject matter is completely up to you. Using the magazines or newspaper CROP and image that inspires you. This will be your subject matter.
It is CRITICAL that you clean your brushes with warm soapy water or the brush will be ruined and you will responsible for replacing them.

This assignment is worth 15 points (1/3 a project grade).
This is a two day assignment.
Project 4: Body Aloud! Project
Based on the the Body Aloud Presentation by your peers, our class will have a discussion about body image. Using photographs of yourself as reference; you will create a painting that incorporates a visual representation of yourself. The painting will be begin as a line drawing and then using geometric shape and your knowledge of color schemes you create a self-portrait. The painting must demonstrate your UNDERSTANDING of the Rule of Thirds. Keep in mind that your self-portrait does not have to be of your face, it could be of other parts of your body.
There is an important creative writing component to this project, where you will do several flow of consciousness exercises to loosen up your minds at the start of the project. At the end of the project you will compose a short Haiku based on your painting, which will be displayed as part of the whole composition.

Color Schemes - Organized color relationships (primary, secondary, complementary, split complementary, neutral, etc.)
Geometric - Hard edged shapes that have distinct corners; geometric is the opposite of organic.
Rule of Thirds - Divided a composition into three equal parts both vertically and horizontally and placing focal points where the vertical and horizontal lines intersect.
The paintings and writings will be showcased at the Body Aloud! Presentation on March 21st in the big Theater.
You will be using acrylic paint for this project.
The project is worth 40 points.
This is at least a 5 day project.
Project 5: Grid Painting
Project 6: Guatemala Mural Project
Working in groups of 3 or 4 you create original murals for the Pinalito Community Center, in Guatemala. This is a global community project, your work will actually be displayed and some work will be painted on the walls of the center in Pinalito.
You will begin with viewing images from the village and understanding the people who live there. The next step is to individually BRAINSTORM ideas and develop concepts for a mural. You must complete at least one sketch that is larger than 5 x 7 inches, feel free to include a description of colors, images, etc. You may chose to paint or color in your sketch. If you do not then you must include your actual color scheme somewhere on your sketch. Once you have your sketch complete, you will need to gesso your canvas. Use at least two layers of gesso, one layer should be all vertical brushstrokes August 26, 2007 2:47 PM After your canvas has beAugust 26, 2007 2:47 PM lightly with pencil onto the canvas. Once the entire drawing has been transfered, you may start painting. I expect everyone in the group to work together; everyone can and SHOULD be painting at the same time.
The canvases will be sent to Pinalito, Guatemala. So take pride in your work and remember the bigger picture.
You will have 5 classes to work on this project. You should be painting no later than the start of class on Wednesday. Friday, April 20th will be your last day to work on this project. On Monday, April 23rd we will have a critique on your work.
