When I'm not teaching, I'm usually enjoying chasing my daughter. When I can catch my breath, I love to take a break with a great book. While there are many types of books that interest me, I gravitate towards historical fiction, adventure novels, and non-fiction. Some of my favorite young adult fiction includes Gathering of the Blue and The Messenger by Lois Lowry and House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer.
Additionally, some of the best moments of my life have been performing on the stage, directing, and going to see stories brought to life in the theater. I am especially passionate about prevention issues related to tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs. I became a Club Live member when I was attending Parkway Middle School in La Mesa and then I started the Friday Night Live chapter (Club Live for HS students) at West Hills High School in Santee. Once I entered college, I became an intern for the program until I became a teacher and an advisor for the club. This inspired me to pilot the Heroes elective at CVMS.
My family is very important to me; they have supported me through so much. My husband Kevin regularly volunteers with me as a chaperone for Club Live and Heroes trips (I think he just likes to go to theme parks!) and he puts up with me on those nights when I stay up grading. We have a fifteen year old cat named KC who keeps us up at night with his screaming meows (we put up with him because he's good looking!). We also have a beautiful daughter, Madeline, who is an active toddler.
Shocking as it may seem, I have always loved school. I've had great teachers who have inspired me to pursue learning always (Mr. Schnaubelt, Mr. Martin, Mr. Brent, Ms. Foster, Mr. Tricarico, Ms. Erickson to name a few). I actually decided to become an English teacher in 8th grade. It's never too early to start thinking about your future career! I graduated Summa Cum Laude from San Diego State University with a major in theater to teach English. Then I entered the teacher preparation program there and had an enriching experience student teaching in the East County area. I have earned a MA in reading instruction from National University and wrote my thesis about best spelling instruction practices for middle school and high school students.
