Welcome to Miss Allard's Home Page!
How to Contact Me...
The best way to contact me is through email at katie.allard@sduhsd.net. If you must contact me by phone, please realize that the call will go straight through to my room and will probably interrupt my class. The best time to contact me by phone is between 12:00pm and 1:30pm. My school phone number is (858) 350-0253 extension 4162.
Office Hours…
7:30-8:00am on Tuesday mornings in room E105 . I am also available before school and at lunch by appointment only. I strongly encourage students to ask questions during class and during tutoring sessions. Students should not hesitate to see any other math teacher during their office hours. Other suggestions for seeking help can be found here!
Math Tutoring…
The math department works closely to ensure student success. As a result, we have come up with a tutoring schedule so that students have many options when seeking extra help. I highly encourage students to seek extra help from any math teacher if they are struggling in my class.
My Schedule (Fall '09-'10)…
About Me…
I was born in Torrance, CA and grew up in Manhattan Beach, CA. I attended public schools in Manhattan Beach from kindergarten through high school. After high school, I decided to get away from Los Angeles and I moved to Davis, CA which is 25 miles west of Sacramento where I attended UC Davis.
I studied mathematics in college and finished my Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics in 2001. During my last year of college, I completed a 1 year internship at Davis Senior High School. I was fortunate enough to work with three different teachers and to study how they conducted and taught their classes at three different levels—Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, and Honors Algebra 2.
I decided to stay in Davis for my graduate work. During my credential year, I student taught in an Algebra 1 and an Algebra 2 class at River City High School in West Sacramento. During this year, I learned a lot about cultural and economic diversity and their impacts on children’s education. Also during my credential year, I took several classes which included how to teach reading in a math class, cultural diversity, working with special populations, and methods of teaching mathematics. I was extremely fortunate to have worked with an excellent credential advisor who taught me a lot about technology and how to challenge students to think about how math is related to the real world.
After finishing my credential, I stuck around Davis for another year and finished my MAT (Masters of Arts in Teaching) in mathematics. During this year, I taught a fifth grade math class using large group Socratic methods at Markham Elementary School in Vacaville. My specialization discourse (just like a thesis) was focused on training teachers to use technology. I was fortunate enough to begin training teachers to use graphing calculators, data collection devices, and TI-Navigator during my credential program.
Prior to coming to Canyon Crest Acadmey , I taught Algebra 2 Honors and Geometry at my alma mater, Mira Costa High School, in Manhattan Beach. I greatly enjoyed working at my old high school and learning from the terrific community of teachers and staff. This summer, I was asked by Texas Instruments (TI) to become one of their T^3 (Teachers Teaching with Technology) National Instructors focused on TI-Navigator and TI-Nspire. As part of my work for TI, I give a lot of presentations and training sessions on TI-Navigator & TI-Nspire throughout the country. Two of my most prominent presentations have been at the NCTM and T^3 International conferences.
This is my 5th year teaching at Canyon Crest Academy. I am looking forward to having a successful year teaching at Canyon Crest Academy this year! It is so exciting working at such a great school and in such a terrific district!
Outside of school, I enjoy working out, reading, and hanging out with friends. I have done a bit of traveling over the past few years (Europe, Mexico, and Costa Rica) and I look forward to traveling to more exotic locations this next summer! |
