Policy

Students are expected to be in school each day.  This is the first and most important requirement for a successful school experience.  Punctuality and attendance are also fundamental for success in life.  The attendance policy of La Costa Canyon High School is based on the fact that a significant part of a student’s experience in any given subject area is derived from discussion, participation, academic activities, and classroom peer relationships.  It is important that students and parents understand that absences must be held to a minimum, absences can affect grades.  We are here to help your student succeed in that respect and ask your help with the following attendance procedures.

CLEARING ABSENCES

PLEASE NOTE:  THE STATE NO LONGER FUNDS SCHOOLS FOR DAYS IN WHICH A STUDENT IS ABSENT FOR ANY REASON.

If your student is absent for any reason at all, call the Attendance Office to excuse his/her absence within 48 hours of the absence.  Written notes are also accepted, but please be aware that we will randomly call to verify notes.  Notes must be dated, signed, and must include the reason for the absence.  If absences have not been excused within 48 hours, the absence will be reflected as a truancy until otherwise notified and a Saturday School may be assigned.

  Off-campus passes

La Costa Canyon High School is a closed campus.

If for any reason your student needs to leave campus, permission by phone or written note must be given to the Attendance Office for his/her release.  Please notify the Attendance Office at least 24 hours in advance to facilitate issuing an off-campus pass.  We also need to know how long they will be gone, if they are coming back or how long you want them to be excused.  These passes must be picked up at the Attendance Office before school, at break, or during lunch.

They will not be delivered to the classroom.

Parent notification of absences

We currently have an automated machine which phones home in the event that your student has been marked absent during one or more of his/her classes.  Please make sure that your current telephone number is on record at the school site.  If you have more than one student at the school, you could receive more than one message per day.  If you need further details on the student, or which class period he/she was marked absent, just call the Attendance Office for this information.

In addition, letters will be sent home regarding students with excessive absences and tardies to class.

HOMEWORK

Homework can be requested via voice mail or e-mail directly from the teacher.  Teachers DO NOT have to allow students to make up homework, class assignments, tests, etc. if the absence is unexcused.
