1.General Philosophy

The basketball program consists of three levels of play; Freshman, J.V. and Varsity.  We wish to develop the feeling of “One Program” as opposed to three independent teams.  Each of these teams will have their own personality and style of play, however the basic fundamentals, attitudes, rules and regulations of conduct will be consistent throughout.  We wish to develop the feeling of being a part of the entire program among players, coaches and parents.  Success at any level is success for all.  “The Program” comes first.   Players, coaches, parents and administration should be willing to give support to the continued success of the Basketball Program.  Our hope is that in giving to the program the individual will receive rewarding experiences and personal growth.

TEAM

ATTITUDE:

The proper attitude is the most important quality the player can possess.  Important principles to keep in mind:

  1. Team Spirit: The ability to sacrifice our own personal glory for the success of the team.  Team comes first.
  2. Confidence: Trust in your team and yourself that you are fully prepared for competition.  Share your confidence and encourage others.
  3. Caring: Show compassion for teammates and coaches.  Be willing to help others and the team. Be Considerate of others emotions.
  4. Poise: Developed through proper practice and preparation.  Being at ease and able to perform in stressful or unfamiliar situations.
  5. Enthusiasm: Play with heart and help stimulate others.  Great things can happen with a little ability and a lot of enthusiasm.
  6. Loyalty: to yourself and all those dependent upon you.
  7. Friendship:  Mutual respect, liking for all.

APTITUDE:

The willingness and ability to learn.  BE COACHABLE.

  1. Pay attention when instruction is given. Question if instruction is unclear.
  2. Make efforts to perform correctly.
  3. Use failures in performance to help you refocus and adjust for future success.
  4. Don’t take criticism of performance personally.  Use information to help you improve performance.
  5. Be patient.  Give new things time.
  6. Work ethic.  No substitute for this.  Worthwhile things come from hard work and careful planning.
  7. Set goals. You control your goals.   Adjust them as needed.
  8. Take initiative: Make decisions and think for yourself.

ABILITY:

The degree of ability one has is largely dependent upon his experience in the game and inborn physical attributes.

  1. Skill: Fundamentals of the game must be learned and one must be able to execute those fundamental in game situations.
  2. Conditioning: Both physical and mental.  Both types of conditioning are needed to be successful.  This takes hard work.

G.B.E.D.: Get Better Every Day

This is a simple philosophy that every day when you walk between the lines you give everything you have to make yourself, our team and our program the best it can be.  Your sole focus everyday should be on getting better.  If you do that image what kind of player you will be and what kind of team we will have by the end of the season. Truly you can receive no higher praise than a coach saying “today we got better.”

2. PLAYER RULES AND REGULATIONS:

Player Rules and Regulations: School and C.I.F. rules for players are outlined in the Code of Conduct policy.  Each player and parent have received a copy and returned signed forms of receipt.  All rules of the Code of Conduct will be enforced by the basketball coach.  Some emphasis and specifics to the basketball program follow.

  1. Basic Principles of Conduct:

The basic principle which the LCCHS basketball teams will strive to achieve is:  “Conduct yourself in such a manner that you bring credit to yourself, your teammates, the team and La Costa Canyon High School.  As a member of the basketball program, you should never engage in activities which will bring discredit to the team.”

  1. General Rules:

1.      All players are required to participate in all meetings, practices and games unless excused by the coaching staff. Missing practice(s) or games may result in suspension from the next contest or longer. Unexcused absence from practice will automatically result in missing the next contest.

    1. Players must follow the general LCCHS athletic policies regarding physical exam, insurance, equipment eligibility, team lockers, athletic events and sp Our support staff (trainers, assistant coaches, statisticians) are an important part of our program.  They are here to help us reach our goals.  Treat them with respect and dignity.
    2. You are responsible for the care of all issued equipment. Anything that is lost or damaged you will be expected to pay for.  Freshman and JV uniform turn in date is February 23rd after school.  Varsity TBA following the CIF playoffs. Any uniform not turned in by March 19th will be considered lost and you will be charged for the total replacement cost.  Replacing  lost uniforms is expensive because they have to be specially made, for example a lost varsity uniform would cost 350.00 to replace.
    3. School colors will be worn daily for practice.  Players are responsible for having jerseys with them daily.
    4. Problems between players must be worked out immediately by themselves or, if not possible, they must meet with the coaching staff until the problems are solved.  Don’t let problems fester.
    5. The coaching staff has an open door policy.  If you have a problem, talk to us.  We’re here to help.
    6. When wearing a LCCHS uniform, act like a high-caliber, class athlete.
    7. Taping and therapy will be done prior to or after practice.  Remember there are other teams also practicing who will need treatment.  Report all injuries to the coach and trainer immediately.  If you see a doctor for an injury, you must present a written release from that doctor in order to resume competition.
    8. Any overt display of displeasure, frustration or profanity will not be tolerated.  The player will be taken out of practice drill or game.  We cannot afford losses of emotional control during competition.  Work on control of your emotions at all times.
    9. The use of drugs, alcohol, or tobacco products will not be tolerated.  As per Code of Conduct any player caught breaking this rule will automatically be suspended for 30 days.
    10. If you must leave practice for any reason, notify the coach.
    11. If you must miss practice or be late, notify the coaching staff early.  Phone the school to notify coach if you are out sick for the day.
    12. Starter vs. Non-starters: Everyone can’t start.  You will earn your playing time.  Trust the coach’s judgment.  Be willing, ready and positive coming off the bench.  We are a team working together for a common goal. If you are uncomfortable with your role on the team, talk with the coach.
    13. All players will ride the team bus to and from all games.  Any exceptions must be cleared in writing.
    14.  Players cannot compete on a club BASKETBALL team while a member of an LCC basketball team per CIF rule 600.
