WORDMASTERS

2003-2004

Mrs. Clark-Burnell's Language Arts Classes

Round I

December

Round II

February

Round III

April

Directions:

For Round II:  The WM Challenge is on Friday, February 20th.  It is an analogy test covering rounds I and II.  This is for fun, not for points.  Any correct answer earns one ticket. Up to 20 tickets are possible!

  • Period 4 needs to do toolkits for 10 words.  Choose the ten words you like best.  Any extra toolkits are worth one extra credit point.
  • For periods 2 & 6 any toolkits for this round are optional. Every toolkit will be worth one extra credit point.

Fill out one toolkit entry for each WordMaster word.  Remember, every section of the toolkit form must be complete, including two definitions of the word and two sentences, one of which must be by a published author. This helps you learn how to actually use a word.

We will review the context and connotation in class.  We will learn how to make analogies in class as well.

How will students be tested?

Mrs. Clark-Burnell will write tests which require students to use the word in a sentence, complete an analogy using the word, or match it to a definition.  These will count towards the reading section of your grade.  Students will take this test before the official WordMaster exam.

The official WordMasters analogy test will not count towards ones grade. It will be for fun and for Excellent Learning Habits Tickets only.

Why study these words?

Reading standard 1.1 requires that students learn to "identify idioms, analogies, metaphors, and similes."  Reading standard 1.3 requires that students "clarify word meanings through the use of definition, example, restatement, or contrast."

Learning these seventy-five words extremely well over the course of the year will not only add seventy-five new words to your vocabulary, but will teach you how to master a word so that you understand its subtle nuances (connotation and multiple definitions), when to use it (context), and how to use it (by examining how professional authors use the word).
