CLASSROOM RULES

Be prepared.  Bring notebook paper, a pencil and other supplies everyday.  Have your homework completed.  Try every problem; make the effort to succeed.  “I can’t” is unacceptable.  Strive to do your best and don’t give up.  You should be proud of the work you turn in.

Be responsible.  You are in charge of your performance, including the grade you earn.  Only you are in control of yourself.

Be respectful.  Do not write on or deface school property.  Take pride in your classroom.  Before being dismissed, pick up trash in your area and straighten your rows.  The teacher’s desk is off limits to students.  Do not use profanity.  Work cooperatively with your peers.

No food, drink or gum in class.  Water is ok; bring your own.  Do not ask to use the drinking fountain.

No distractions.  Turn off and put away any cell phones, pagers or electronic devices.  Reserve personal grooming for the restroom.  Put away all work for other classes.  Refrain from passing notes and talking with other classmates at inappropriate times.

CONSEQUENCES

Each infraction of the rules will result in a warning.  An excess of warnings will result in a student conference, parent contact, referral, after school detention and/or Saturday school.  Electronic devices will be confiscated (and cell phones answered?!) if seen or heard in class and returned at the discretion of the teacher.

PASSES

You will receive 6 passes to leave the room for the semester.  Any passes left over at the end of the semester may be redeemed for extra credit.

EXTRA CREDIT

There will be several extra credit opportunities throughout the semester.  I encourage you to take advantage of them as they can add up to 2% to your grade.  Here are some ongoing possibilities:

If you send me an email, I will give you 5 points.  If your parents send me an email, you will earn another 10 points.  This is valid once a semester.

Each time you attend the Math Center or the Tutoring Center, you can earn 2 points.  Obtain a slip verifying your attendance for at least 30 minutes and turn it in with your homework.

GRADING POLICY

Grades are calculated on a total point basis.  Your overall grade will be based on four categories; each one is explained in detail below.

  TESTS/FINAL EXAM

Tests will usually be given at the end of each chapter.  The final exam each semester will be counted twice.  If you are absent on a test day, a zero will be entered for your grade.  You have the opportunity to make up the test only if your absence is excused and cleared within 48 hours.  Makeup days are once a month at 6 am.  If you absolutely cannot make the scheduled makeup day, you must make arrangements with me prior to that date.  If something happens the morning of the makeup, notify me immediately.

  QUIZZES

Quizzes will be given frequently during the semester.  If you are absent on a quiz day, a zero will be entered for your grade.  You have the opportunity to make up the quiz only if your absence is excused and cleared within 48 hours.  Makeup days are once a month at 6 am.  If you absolutely cannot make the scheduled make up day, you must make arrangements with me prior to that date.  If something happens the morning of the makeup, notify me immediately.

  PROJECT(S)

You will have at least one project to complete each semester.  Refer to class handouts and the website for details.

  HOMEWORK

Homework is an essential part of this class.  Each assignment must be turned in on time for full credit.  (See below for homework grading policy.)  If you are absent, you are responsible for getting missed assignments on your first day back to class. They are due the following class.  You can also check the website for the assignments you missed; they are posted daily.  When you turn in a missed assignment, write ABSENT in the upper left hand corner of your paper.

The grade breakdown is as follows.  I will round up any grade at .5.  For example, if you earn an 89.5, that becomes an A-, a 72.5 becomes a C, and a 59.5 is passing - barely!

A+      100 – 97                 C+      79 – 77

A        96 – 93                   C        76 - 73

A -      92 – 90                   C-       72 - 70

B+      89 – 87                   D+      69 - 67

B        86 – 83                   D        66 - 63

B -      82 – 80                   D -      62 – 60

ATTENDANCE AND TARDY POLICIES

All absences must be cleared within 48 hours.  Otherwise, you will be considered truant.  Truancies may not be made up under any circumstances.  If you are truant on a test/quiz day, you will receive a zero. The consequences for unexcused absences are:

First offense – after school detention
  Second offense – referral/Saturday school

Be in your seat when the bell rings.  Otherwise you will be considered tardy.  The consequences for unexcused tardies are:

After 3 unexcused tardies – parent contact
After 4 unexcused tardies – after school detention
  After 5 unexcused tardies – referral/Saturday school

HOMEWORK GRADING POLICY

Homework is checked on a regular basis.  You must ALWAYS show your work and try every problem.  ALWAYS box your final answer when working out a problem.  Points will be deducted for the following reasons:

The assignment is done in pen
  No name
  No page number and problems
  No warmup
Notes are turned in with the assignment
  Wrong assignment is turned in
Assignment is sloppy or unreadable.  Be neat and proud of your work.
