                      Tips for the CAHSEE Writing Prompt

When answering essay questions, remember that the objective is to demonstrate how well you can explain and support an idea, not just what you know. Keep the following in mind:

Dissect or attack the prompt. Underline key words like define, compare, explain, etc.
Think before you write. The CAHSEE offers you enough time to brainstorm and  organize your ideas before you write.  Map, graph, cluster  or outline the main points you want to make, determining  the order in which you want to write your points and  the support you want to add, then write.
Remember, a good answer:
Starts with a direct response to the question.
Mentions the topics or areas described in the question.
Provides specific as well as general information.
Uses academic language.
Then write legibly. Leave some space so you can add to your answer, later.
Proofread your essay. Check for grammar, punctuation, spelling, etc. This often adds points!  The CAHSEE allows you to proofread several timesMore than a few grammar or spelling mistakes may bring your grade down. 

You might be asked to write any ONE of the following kinds of essays:
@ a biographical narrative ( including an organized sequence of events)
@ a response to literature
@ persuasive
@ a   business letter
@ something expository or analytical, such as writing based on research
