As your counselors, we want to talk with you about any concerns you have about anything. Your concerns may be school related or may be about emotional, social, family or any personal issues. We will work together to find methods to solve these issues or at least help you to deal with things we cannot solve.
As your counselor, we will also help you to plan your future by helping you choose appropriate high school classes and help you make decisions about your career and/or college choices.
Our goal as your counselor is to help you make appropriate choices about your life and help you realize that you will make some mistakes. The important part of making mistakes is to take responsibility for those mistakes and then move on with your life in a positive manner. We also want to help you realize that neither you, nor we, can control some of what happens to you. Therefore we will work together to discover positive ways of handling those negative issues.

Important Things All Students and Parents Should Know. (ASUNTOS IMPORTANTES QUE TODOS LOS ESTUDIANTES DEBEN SABER)
We encourage students and parents to read our COUNSELING CONNECTION (printed every other week) for lots of information.
We have many
support groups
for our students to share their thoughts and feelings with those who may
have had similar experiences. All the groups are confidential, meaning
that "whatever says in the room, stays in the room." The groups meet
once a week for the last 45 minutes of a class. The times are rotated so
that students do not miss a class more than once a month for group.
Attendance is at the discretion of each teacher. If a student wishes to
join a support group s/he should see a counselor. Students may join a
group any time during the year.
Sometimes students would
prefer to talk with other students about a concern. Our
Peer Assistance
Listeners are trained to help other teens. PAL referral forms can be found
in the counseling office. Anyone can refer: a friend, family, staff
member or refer yourself.
Project Options
WHAT IS PROJECT OPTIONS?
Project Options is a multi-million-dollar prevention study funded by the
National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, and is conducted by
staff and interns from UCSD. They come to San
Dieguito Academy on Tuesdays during lunchtime
in room 90 and provide a free pizza lunch to
students who participate. Students come on a
voluntary basis, and receive services free of
charge. Any student can come to Project Options regardless of whether
they have or not started drinking alcohol, or have begun to
experiment with alcohol.
Students
have the opportunity to discuss
the Healthy Kids Survey information with
each other. Along with alternatives
to drinking, topics include how to avoid
negative experiences, how to reduce stress, and how to communicate
better with parents, friends, and teachers. Students can choose an
individual or group format. This prevention program is not therapy or
treatment, and does not overlap with services
currently available at our school.
Throughout the
year, our
Student Success Services plan Successful Parenting forums.
For families dealing with substance abuse we provide the READI Program (Recovery Education and Alcohol/Drug Instruction. Students may refer themselves or may choose READI in place of suspension when found with possession of alcohol/drugs or paraphernalia or under the influence. Click here to read the READI Newsletters.
