Art for New Media Course Overview

Fulfills the UC/CSU Visual & Performing Art Requirement with a C- grade or better

"Art for New Media is a digital art class that will teach students how to create interactive digital art for on-screen display, mostly through the World Wide Web. They will learn art theory concepts such as the elements of art, the principles of design, typography and color theory. They will also learn the powerful software tools used to create art for new media such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe ImageReady, Macromedia Dreamweaver and Flash. In addition, they will learn concepts unique to interactive digital art such as user interface (UI) design, interactivity and motion graphics.Because of the project-based nature of the class, students will be able to learn at their own pace and create meaningful pieces to add to their portfolios."


This course provides a basic foundation in visual arts concepts and gives a practical experience in the production of artwork in digital media with a focus the Web and interactivity. The emphasis is on 1) the elements and principles of design; 2) the communication of ideas and 3) the process and development of human expression.

Art for New Media is an ART COURSE which uses the computer and software as tools to create artwork. Although general computer experience it recommended, prior knowledge of software is not required.

Each assignment will focus on one or more of the California State Standards in Visual Art:

1.0 ARTISTIC PERCEPTION
Students perceive and respond to works of art, objects in nature, events, and the environment. They also use the vocabulary of the visual arts to express their observations.

2.0 CREATIVE EXPRESSION
Students apply artistic processes and skills, using a variety of media to communicate meaning and intent in original works of art.

3.0 HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL CONTEXT
Students analyze the role and development of the visual arts in past and present cultures throughout the world, noting human diversity as it relates to the visual arts and artists.

4.0 AESTHETIC VALUING
Students analyze, assess, and derive meaning from works of art, including their own, according to the elements of art, the principles of design, and aesthetic qualities.

5.0 CONNECTIONS, RELATIONSHIPS, APPLICATIONS
Students apply what they learned in the visual arts across subject areas. They develop competencies and creative skills in problem solving, communication, and management of time and resources that contribute to lifelong learning and career skills. They also learn about careers in and related to the visual arts.
