ESL 1/ESL 2

Taught by: Joanne Serrano

Both ESL 1 and ESL 2 are taught by the same teacher. However, the two courses are quite different despite their similar names.

ESL 1 is a course designed for students with a very limited ability of communicating in English. It is designed to give students a firm background in basic English by teaching them to use and comprehend spoken and written English.

ESL 2 provides more intensive instruction and practice for students with a low to intermediate ability to speak English. It is designed to provide an introduction to the sound system, stress, and rhythmic patterns of the English language through listening and speaking exercises. Individualized instruction is included in order to improve basic reading comprehension. Practice in writing is required to improve the students’ ability in writing basic sentence structures as well as incorporating grammar into their work.

Examples of Student Work

"I've had a very difficult journey troughout my life. I used to live in mexico and then I can to this us. I wanted to start a family some day and give my kids a better life.

My life in Mexico was very difficult. I started warking at a young age. They didn't treat me very well but it was all I had to support my mather.

When I cam to u.s. It was very hard because I had no money. All my family and memories were in Mexico. I had to find a job to support my mom.

I wanted to start a family someday. I wanted to learn english someday. After school I wanted to study to be chef."
